December hasn’t begun and we’re all beginning to feel the pinch. The holiday stressors can pile up and leave us feeling depleted and frazzled. Reclaim this year’s holiday by trying these 10 simple and practical tips. There’s no reason that this joyous time of year should push you to your breaking point.

These useful tips can help you to reduce stress and gain a relaxed perspective this season. Take a look!

  • Cut something extra: This looks different for every family. You may find that eliminating homemade decorations is a smart way to keep your family grounded, while another person may view the tradition as a non-negotiable. Take a long look at your events, to-do list, and yearly traditions and make cuts to the things that don’t bring you joy and peace during this special time of year.
  • Make memories without making stress: Find ways to keep the essence of tradition without the work. If you love decorating cookies but don’t have time for the mess, buy store-bought confections and decorate them with your family! Watch a movie together instead of going to a stressful event. Make simple swaps that don’t sacrifice the special memories.
  • Go digital: We all love online shopping, but have you considered a digital Christmas card this year? It could save you hours of prep work and a great deal of money as opposed to paper cards.
  • Delegate and conquer: If your partner is great at finding unique gifts for your siblings, hand over the reins! Ask for help from family members before hosting the Christmas dinner. Hire someone to help with the jobs you aren’t able to complete without unnecessary stress. Having help isn’t a failure, it’s how people get things done!
  • Cook once, eat twice: When cooking your meals, double up! This simple trick can mean dinner tonight and a second one in the freezer. Keep a log of what’s available and use the frozen meals on nights with busier than normal schedules.
  • Set a budget and stick with it: Financial stress isn’t worth it. It’s expensive to buy gifts for everyone you know, but it can be done on a budget. Set a strict budget for each gift. Then make yourself accountable to the budget and make a game of staying under!
  • Send regrets: We’d all be a bit more happy over the holidays if we could say “no” a bit more frequently. Cut one or two parties from your calendar, or plan to stay for a shortened amount of time. You may find this gives you the type of wiggle room you’re looking for.
  • Take shortcuts: Gifts look great wrapped with a bow, but there are also beautiful gift bag options that work just as well! Save your wrapping skills for birthday gifts. Use simple tricks to shortcut the work you have to complete during the busy holiday season.
  • Be frank with friends and family: If you don’t have the time for a certain event or find gift exchanges stressful, talk to your friends and family. Let your friends know you just can’t swing this year’s open house party. Talk with the cousin who you exchange gifts with, they may also agree that the time and expense isn’t something they would like to keep up.  
  • Take a moment for self-care: Self-care is a term that gets used a lot. But that’s because it’s so incredibly important! This may not mean booking a massage for yourself, but it could mean a night in with Netflix and takeout. Self-care looks different for everyone. Find ways to prioritize yourself at least once weekly during the holidays to keep sane.

No single one of these tips works like a magic bullet. Creating a stress-free holiday means cutting back and being mindful of your personal stress levels throughout the season. Use these ideas in harmony to make this year your most laid-back holiday yet!
